We all had a favorite subject growing up. You know that one that you just really got into. The one you didn't mind doing the homework for. The one that you did really well without having to try all that hard. For me that subject was science! So much so I decided to become a science teacher.

So obviously my favorite subject to teach is science, right? Well, no actually. While I still enjoy science and teaching science, there is a subject that I enjoy more since becoming a homeschool teacher. And that subject is History!
I've always enjoyed learning about the past, but in public school history was all about memorizing dates and details. My brain does not work that way. Memorization is not my strong suite. And did I really care that the Battle of Waterloo was June 18, 1815. NO! I cared about what the battle was like for the people that experienced it. And not just the soldiers. What life was like for the women and children. Who did the battle effect and how.
In my experience, history in public school was not about learning how people use to live and how the world use to work. And let's be honest, that is the part of history that is interesting. So, because I love learning about how life was like for people long ago, being able to learn (and teach) history without worrying about the dates make it really exciting.
But learning about how people lived, what technologies were available, how the world operated, what travel was like, etc., is really fascinating. And if you are learning about these things, history can exciting! Sometimes we learn about technologies from the past and wonder why we don't do them anymore. Sometimes we learn about hardships people had to deal with and it makes us more grateful for the things we have today. Sometimes we learn about stories passed down through the ages that spark creativity in my kids or teach them valuable life lessons.
History is fascinating and there is so much to learn about. I like learning new things, and there is no shortage! I feel like that is the reason it is has based science for me as my favorite subject to teach.
