3rd grade is upon us for my middle daughter! We had a really great 2nd grade year, and I'm hoping she will continue to make the excellent progress she has been making. Here are the curriculum choices we have made for the 22/23 school year:
Math: Math U See Gamma
We started her homeschool career with Math U See primer, but when bigger switched to Teaching Textbooks, younger sister followed suit. And when older sister decided to make the switch back to Math U See, little sister again decided that was the right move for her as well. And mom was very happy!
We started with the Gamma level since that is one I had on hand even though it was a little above where I might have placed her. We decided we would just take our time and review as she needed it. And she has been doing fantastic! She started using the program in January of 2022, so she may need the next level by the end of the year and she may not. Since she is a little ahead it is fine either way.
English Language Arts: Pinwheels Year 2 and Brave Writer
Pinwheels was life changing for my 3rd grader during the 21/22 school year. It was the perfect tool for her. She went from forgetting letter sounds to reading a level 3 reader almost entirely by herself! So of course we will be continuing with Pinwheels this year. She will finish Year 1 sometime in August, and then we will begin Year 2.
We will still be doing a few activities from Brave Writer (we do them as group subjects with older sister). And I'm even considering do a Dart or two with her as well. We shall see what time permits us.
We are also doing Root Words Beginning together as a group subject this year. I'm hoping that working on some root words will help not only increase vocabulary, but also help them to decode words that are new to them. And maybe even improve some spelling.
Science: Real Science Odyssey Astronomy Level 2 (and 1)
This year we will be studying Astronomy as a family. My 7th grader will be going through Level 2, but will also be joining the rest of us as we go through level 1. All of my kiddos have been really intrigued by all things space since we visited Kennedy Space Center in 2021. My daughter has even asked for a telescope for her birthday. So we are taking advantage of their interest and studying the night sky this year.
Geography: World Geography Unit Study
We started this during the 21/22 school year, and will mostly likely continue for a few years to come. I am using resources from Teachers Pay Teachers and a book from Evan Moor as well as a few I have created on my own. I will do a separate post with more detail on this.
Fairy Tale Unit Study
What started as a Braver Writer writing project has turned into a multi year unit study. I found a book called Fairy Tale Science at a local book store and it has been one of my most favorite finds to date! We try to link the fairy tales we study to the country we are studying in Geography, so these two subjects really are one. I again will be doing a separate post with more details on this.
Art: "How to Teach Art to Children" and "Teaching Art with Books Kids Love"
We will be continuing are Art study from the 21/22 school year. We are about half way through these books and will finish them out this year. I will have another post where I share more details.
