7th Grade Curriculum Picks - 22/23 School Year

Writer's picture: Niki LavinNiki Lavin

I can't believe we have a 7th grader! I still remember her first day of kindergarten and it truly seems like such a short time ago. But here we are at 7th grade and she has grown so much in both height and age as well as in her education. Her 6th grade year last year was one of our best year yet, so I am excited to see what this year holds!

Here are the curriculum choices we made for her this year:

Math: Math U See Pre-Algebra

We started our homeschool career with Math U see, be my daughter wasn't sure if she really like it. So we spent a few years trying out some other curriculum. In the end, we have landed back at Math U See and are very happy with our choice.

She started the Pre-Algebra level in January of 2022. It is an advanced level for her, but she did not want to do the Epsilon level which mostly focuses on fractions. So I allowed her to start the next level and we are just taking our time. We stop and review anything we need to and so far it is working really well. She will continue the Pre-Algebra level for the 22/23 school year. If she is ready we will get the next level up, but if not she is still ahead of the game.

English Language Arts: Lightning Literature Grade 7, Fix It! Grammar Level 3, Sequential Spelling Level 1, Brave Writer

I think we have finally found some items for ELA that my daughter does not dislike. And I'm taking that as a HUGE win! We started Fix It! Grammar already because she was really eager to get started. And so far she is loving it!

We also stated Sequential Spelling. I'm not 100% sold, but I think it is helping. I will update after we have used it for a little while.

We are excited to try Lightning Literature. We have been using Brave Writer for a few years, and while I absolutely love the program and my daughter likes it, I was feeling like we need something with a little more structure. We are hoping Lightning Literature will provide that.

And of course we will continue using our beloved Brave Writer. They have made some updates, so I'm excited to see how those changes work for us.

History: Unit Studies using History Smashers Book Series

This past year we did a Women's History unit study during Women's History month. We used the History Smashers book for our spine and my daughter fell in love with it. As soon as she knew there were more books in the series, she asked if we could go through them all. So for history this year we are doing Unit Studies using each of these books. We are going to try to go in timeline order with a few exceptions. I will of course share with you as I plan these out and update you with how they go.

Science: Real Science Odyssey Astronomy Level 2 (and 1)

This year we will be studying Astronomy as a family. My 7th grader will be going through Level 2, but will also be joining the rest of us as we go through level 1. All of my kiddos have been really intrigued by all things space since we visited Kennedy Space Center in 2021. My daughter has even asked for a telescope for her birthday. So we are taking advantage of their interest and studying the night sky this year.

Geography: World Geography Unit Study

We started this during the 21/22 school year, and will mostly likely continue for a few years to come. I am using resources from Teachers Pay Teachers and a book from Evan Moor as well as a few I have created on my own. I will do a separate post with more detail on this.

Fairy Tale Unit Study

What started as a Braver Writer writing project has turned into a multi year unit study. I found a book called Fairy Tale Science at a local book store and it has been one of my most favorite finds to date! We try to link the fairy tales we study to the country we are studying in Geography, so these two subjects really are one. I again will be doing a separate post with more details on this.

Art: "How to Teach Art to Children" and "Teaching Art with Books Kids Love"

We will be continuing are Art study from the 21/22 school year. We are about half way through these books and will finish them out this year. I will have another post where I share more details.

If you would like to hear more about what we are using, check out the video below:

We are excited about our choices for the new school year! What about you? Have you finalized your choices. Are you using any of these? Is there a curriculum you are really excited to use this year? Please share below!
