World Geography & Fairy Tales Unit Study

Writer: Niki LavinNiki Lavin

This year we we finished up the history unit study we were working on and I asked my oldest daughter if she would like to continue moving forward on our history timeline, or take a break and do some geography. She choose geography and I'm really glad she did! We have been having such a great time learning about continents and countries.

We started with Europe, and they have A LOT of countries. So we are still working our way through them. We decided to choose a few countries (I think we choose 8) to learn about in depth and then just learn a little about each of the others. We choose countries were my daughters ancestors are from so they could learn more about their heritage. This has been so fun for them. They are really enjoying learning more about where they came from!

For our in depth looks at countries, some we are using brochures I found on Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT). And I found another wonderful item that is a little country recap for all the countries of the world. This is one of my most favorite finds from TPT yet. I believed the brochure bundle would include one for all the countries on each continent, but it is only a select few. So I did have to copy and past few things and create a few brochures myself to get one for each country we wanted to do.

I also could not find a worksheet I liked for the girls to use in the geography binders, so I created one for them to use. If you would like to have it, click on the link under the picture below and it is yours!

We are using books from the library, videos from YouTube, and web searches to find our information about each country. And when we can, we are talking to grandparents and great grandparents about what they know. And we are really enjoying learning about worlds that a different than our own.

Another resource that I am using and loving is the Geography Through Art by Sharon Jeffus and Jamie Aramini. It has art projects for contraries around the world. There are some really fantastic activities in the book and we are really loving them. I feel like my kids are so much more engaged with each country because of these activities. It is an excellent book that I highly recomend even if you are not doing a whole world geography unit. The art projects are just flat out fun! After recording the video I have linked down below, I found this great resource from Evan Moor (if you don't already know, we are big fans around here!). And man do I wish I had found it sooner in our unit! It is a fantastic resource and a must have if you are going to be studying world geography! If you would like to hear more about how we are doing this unit study in our homeschool and see a sneak peek into some of these resources, watch the video below:

And the last thing I want to mention is that we are tying our Fairy Tales unit study into our geography unit study by choosing Fairy Tales from or that take place in a country we are learning about. This has really help my girls understand the culture of specific countries and they are just loving both of these unit studies together.
